How Often Should You Get Highlights?

Learn what determines highlight maintenance timing, from root contrast and placement to tone and hair growth.

Placement affects timing

Highlight maintenance depends heavily on where brightness begins. Highlights placed close to the scalp usually show regrowth sooner than softer, more diffused placement.

Root contrast matters

The greater the contrast between your natural base and highlighted hair, the sooner regrowth may become visually noticeable. Lower-contrast results often provide more flexibility.

Tone may need attention first

Sometimes the placement still looks good but the tone needs refreshing. In that case, a gloss may be more appropriate than repeating the entire highlight service.

Avoid unnecessary overlap

Thoughtful maintenance also helps avoid unnecessary overlap on previously lightened hair. Your stylist can evaluate what actually needs to be refreshed at each visit.
