Lowlights vs. Highlights: Understanding the Difference

Highlights create brightness
Highlights create lighter pieces within the hair, while lowlights introduce or restore darker depth. Both techniques change contrast, but they move the color in opposite directions.
Lowlights restore depth
Lowlights can be especially useful when hair has become overly light or visually flat. Restoring selected darker pieces can make existing blonde appear brighter by comparison.
Using both creates dimension
Combining highlights and lowlights can create a multidimensional result with visible movement. The balance can be subtle or dramatic depending on the desired finish.
